What moves the price of tree removal in Ocala and The Villages

A large oak beside a house being taken down in sections with a crane arm lifting the pieces

There is no honest one-size price for a tree removal, because the price follows the job: how big the tree is, how the crew can reach it, what stands near it, what shape it is in and what happens to the wood afterward. This page does not quote a dollar figure, and neither should anyone who has not seen your tree. Here is what actually moves a quote for homeowners in Ocala, The Villages and the towns around them, and how to get a number you can rely on.

The six things that change a removal quote

1. Size and height

A taller, wider tree has more wood to lower, cut up and carry out. That means more crew time and, often, bigger equipment. A small ornamental and a mature live oak are different jobs even when both are simply “a tree in the yard.”

2. How the crew can get to it

A tree beside an open driveway is one job. A tree behind a fence, past a narrow gate or over a back lanai may need to be taken down piece by piece with rigging, by hand, instead of with a machine at the base. Tell the estimator about gates, pools, screen enclosures and irrigation before the walkthrough, not on the day.

3. What is near the tree

Houses, roofs, fences, pool cages and power lines all change how a tree can safely come down. Pieces near a structure are normally lowered on rigging rather than dropped. Florida Power & Light is plain about lines: you should never attempt to trim any vegetation growing near overhead power lines yourself. Point out any line near the tree during the walkthrough. 4. The condition of the tree

A dead, split, leaning or storm-damaged tree can behave unpredictably, so the crew may have to change how they approach it. If you are not sure whether your tree is a problem, our guide to the warning signs that a tree needs to come down is a good first read.

5. What happens to the wood and debris

Hauling everything away, chipping the brush, or stacking the wood for your own use are different amounts of work, and the choice belongs in the written estimate. It is one of the most common reasons two quotes for the “same” tree do not match.

6. The stump

Twisted Pine does not offer stump grinding, so a removal quote from us covers taking the tree down and the cleanup agreed in writing, not the stump. If you are comparing us with a company that includes grinding, you are comparing two different jobs. See how to compare removal estimates side by side.

Does a permit add to the cost?

Sometimes the answer is a rule rather than a rate. Permit rules for removing a tree are set by the county or city and differ from place to place, so check with your local planning or code office before work on a larger or protected tree. Florida law also limits what a local government can require on certain residential lots: under Section 163.045 of the Florida Statutes, a local government may not require a notice, application, approval, permit, fee or mitigation for removing a tree on residential property when the owner holds documentation from an ISA-certified arborist (or a Florida-licensed landscape architect) that the tree poses an unacceptable risk. Whether that applies to your lot is a question for your local office. Florida Statutes 163.045: Issuance of permits for pruning, trimming, or removal of a tree on residential property

How to get a number you can trust

Have someone look at the tree in person. UF/IFAS Extension advises getting more than one written estimate and asking what procedures are involved, what equipment will be used, the price and the time frame. It also notes that specialized equipment, qualified skills and insurance will cost more, and that good tree work is worth the additional investment because poor work may cost more in the long run. It also warns that if you hire an uninsured company or person, you may be held responsible for medical bills and lost wages for an injured worker, so ask for proof of insurance. A price over the phone or from a photo can only be a guess. A written estimate after a walkthrough should name the trees, the method, the cleanup and anything excluded.
